School children in Whitehaven have been dashing around a race track in memory of a much-loved teenager.

St James' Junior held its traditional sports day on Friday with an additional event in memory of 15-year-old Kieran Goulding.

The late teenager, along with his brother Adam, were former pupils at the primary school.

The sporty event was held at the Copeland Stadium in Whitehaven.

Sarah Kitchen, from the school's senior leadership team, said: "We started the afternoon with the Kieran Goulding charity dash and all the children ran a lap of the track in memory of him."

A bucket collection was held, where approximately £200 was given to Kie Park, the memorial skate park recently opened in Kieran's memory.

"We then had a more traditional sports day of relays and races," said Mrs Kitchin.

Kieran's mum, Tracey Nicholson, says the event has brought memories of her sons' sports days.

She said: "Both boys attended St James' juniors and it was a special time in their lives. A time when they formed friends. The school taking part in a fun event for Kieran is very special and appropriately named a dash as Kieran didn't walk slowly.

"I would just like to say a big thank you to the school and teachers and also the head Moira Maughan, for taking time in their sports day for Kieran. I have lots of memories of Kieran in his school sports days."
