Three Copeland army cadets are among those who have been selected for Cumbria Army Cadet Force's first overseas training expedition in 20 years.

A group of 38 cadets from across Cumbria will fly out to Cyprus at the end of May and will spend time at Troodos Station, the oldest remaining British Military base.

Jessica Smith, 15, and Owen Smith, 14, from the Cleator Moor detachment and Stephen Rogers, 15, of the Whitehaven detachment, are among those who will part.

The cadets will complete a challenging expedition in the Troodos Mountains, climbing and camping for three days and two nights on Mount Olympus.

They will also go to Cyprus' capital Nicosia for a tour of the United Nations headquarters, where they will meet the UN British Contingent and complete the military swimming test ready for a day of water sports and adventure training at Episkopi Garrison.

The group will meet the 1st Battalion Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment for a day of shooting and military training on the ranges.

The final 38 cadets were selected following a selection process which factored in their commitment and attitude to training, completion of an Easter camp expedition, their disciplinary record and physical ability to complete the challenges of the expedition.

Sellafield Contractors Group Charity Committee have helped to fund the trip.

The 38 cadets will take part in a pre-trip training weekend next month.
