A FUNDRAISING boxing match has helped support the Special Care Baby Unit at West Cumberland Hospital.

Liam Irving raised £140 for the unit after the staff looked after his nephew Jacob Mellon.

He said: “I decided to do it because my nephew was seven weeks premature and in the hospital for four weeks. We thought it would be nice to give something back.

“The people I presented the money to were the same people who had looked after him.”

Hospital staff intend to use the money to obtain specialist equipment to help preterm babies transition into the world.

And Liam is stepping back into the ring later this year to raise more money for charity.

He said: “There was a few fights on the night and I decided to do mine for charity. It was my second fight and I’ll be doing another one for charity later this year.”
