Hundreds of Easter eggs have been collected by generous bikers on their annual charity ride.

Nearly 200 motorbikes took to the roads of west Cumbria for yesterday’s event, organised by Whitehaven Motorcycle Action Group (MAG).

Bikers set off from Keswick and made their way to the Lakeland Livestock Centre, Cockermouth, the former Greggains garage at Maryport, Tesco in Workington – before heading to the Age UK centre on Whitehaven harbourside.

Motorcyclists donated Easter eggs and also collected them from members of the public along the route.

About 500 eggs were collected, which have been given to Age UK West Cumbria, Barnardo’s, Footsteps Child Development Centre and the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.

Anne Crayston, of Whitehaven MAG, said the event had gone “fantastically well”.

“The weather has been great which has helped people come out.

“I think everybody has had a great day because it’s been a good opening to the biking season.

“It’s been fantastic as well that we’ve had the MPs out and they’ve been talking to us and finding out about our issues as bikers across the county.

“It’s also nice to raise issues for the charities in all of this as well.”

Sue Hayman, Workington MP, who met participants at Cockermouth, said she was happy to support the group.

“There’s a reputation that bikers have that isn’t correct and I think it needs to be focused on the good work that MAG does,” she said.

“I think it’s really important to promote safe biking, to promote the community it is – and promote the good work it does for charity.”

Meeting the motorcyclists at the finishing point in Whitehaven was Copeland MP Trudy Harrison. She said it was great to see so many motorcycles involved.

“It’s great for me to understand the road requirements from the perspective of motorcyclists so that I can make sure those needs are met in Parliament,” she said.

Donations of eggs were also made by Tesco in Workington, Wilko in Workington and Electricity North West.

Whitehaven MAG is part of a national organisation which campaigns to protect and promote the interests and rights of all riders.
