AN ARLECDON man threw a phone at his partner during an episode of domestic violence, a court has heard.

Stephen Woods, 51, caused "reddening and bruising" to the right side of Nichola Preston's face and eye.

The defendant, of Murton Park, appeared before magistrates in Workington on Friday.

He pleaded guilty to assault and was given a 12-month community order.

Diane Jackson, prosecuting, said an argument had broken out between Woods and his partner's daughter after he returned from a night of drinking at 11pm on August 3.

The prosecutor said the defendant had "had a few drinks in Egremont" and on his return "he was downstairs having words with her daughter."

Miss Preston challenged him and shouted at him in the kitchen. Woods threw a phone at his partner, which "left her in pain and seeing stars."

She then threatened to call the police and a tussle ensued. In response, a "worried" Miss Preston threw water from a kettle over Woods.

This caused Woods to call the police. When he stepped out the house his partner locked the patio doors behind him.

He claimed to have reddening to the chest but the attending police officer did not see any injuries.

Craig Smith, for Woods, said they have been in a "solid relationship for three years" and the argument stemmed out of his client's concern for Miss Preston's daughter.

His community order will require he carries out 10 days of rehabilitation. Woods was also fined £400, a £85 victim surcharge and £85 costs.
