Saying farewell: Viv Young, the head of Ennerdale and Kinniside School, who has retired after 33 years

Viv Young was treated to a surprise party after stepping down from her position at Ennerdale and Kinniside School.

Viv spent 38 years in teaching – 33 years at Ennerdale and Kinniside School and 20 years as headteacher.

“I knew something must have been going on as I was sent for my nails done and told to turn up at the school in pink,” said Viv, 59.

“The children had made a guard of honour and I had to walk through it. I got quite emotional when I had to do that.”

The school grounds had been decorated with balloons, a buffet had been made and a large sign reading ‘We Love Mrs Young’.

June Pearson, senior teaching assistant, has worked with Viv for 20 years at the school. She said: “We wanted to organise something that involved the whole community.

“Viv is amazing and such a caring person, not just to the children but the parents too.

“It makes the school like a family and it really is the end of an era.”

The school will have a new headteacher from September but Viv is fully focused on her retirement.

“That’s it now, I won’t be coming back to do anymore work, I want to enjoy myself,” said Viv.

“I’m looking forward to watching more musical theatre.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to have worked here. I’ve had some wonderful memories here and have enjoyed every second of it.”
