A former Cleator Moor pub looks set turned into a house if granted permission from Copeland planners.

The Robin Hood public house on Bowthorn Road closed along with four other local pubs in July 2012.

The applicant’s agent said the public house was built in 1875, but it has “little historical value”. He added: “The existing building was used as a public house until January 2016.

The business folded after the licensee had financial problems and the business became unsustainable.

“The present purchased the property and the building was de-licensed in late February 2016.”

The agent argued that because there was a public house just 450 metres from the site of the former pub, The New Crown, the plans to turn it into a house were viable.

“As this is not the sole public house and it has closed for financial reasons the change into a dwelling complies with the requirements of the council’s own local plan.

“Both internal and external work has been carried out when the last major building programme was completed in the late 1980s.”

The news comes on after several pubs have closed their doors on Cleator Moor in the last year - with one of the latest being the Commercial opposite the town’s Market Square.

The Commerical had reopened last year after months of refurbishment, but owners decided to close thee pub’s doors after a break-in saw more than £200 taken from the till.

Wath Brow’s Littles Arms, off Trumpet Road also closed its doors last year.
