lots to smile about: Carol Cartmell from Whitehaven toasts her £100,000 Lotto scratchcard success with partner Mark Lewthwaite at the Ennerdale Hotel

Carol Cartmell, 41, who lives in the Greenbank area, scooped the top prize from a National Lottery scratchcard.

She was initially stunned at the shock win, but says she is now considering the possibility of purchasing her own home – something she has never before been able to contemplate.

The lucky Purple Scratchcard was bought from the Spar shop, in Richmond Hill Road, Whitehaven, last Wednesday.

Carol said: “I was sitting in the car outside the shop scratching the card – never imagining that it would be a winner. I then saw the £100,000 symbol, it then appeared again – and then again for a third time.

“I did a double-take as I just didn’t think this could be right.

“I ran back into the shop to the assistant who sold me the scratchcard, and she confirmed it was a winner,” she added.

In shock, Carol raced to her parents’ home, before driving home to share the news with partner Mark Lewthwaite.

“Then the excitement set in,” she admitted. “It has just been a roller-coaster of emotions since and I still cannot believe that this has really happened to me and I really do now have a six-figure bank account.”

While Carol’s first priority will be to treat Mark and her three children, she is already planning how to use the cash to secure their long-term future.

She said: “Owning a home is something which I never believed would happen to me. It was just so far off my radar – it was an impossibility, a dream.

“The win on the scratchcard has made this a reality. I may even consider buying the council house I am living in as we love it here.”
