CHRISTMAS lights will adorn Main Street again this year after the town council agreed to cover the cost.

Egremont Town Council will put £10,000 towards the display which – alongside the Christmas Wonderland – attracts thousands.

The event, organised by Egremont Amenity Committee, had to be cancelled last year when bad weather struck. However, the lights were able to go ahead.

Committee member Gareth Stringer said: “It is fantastic that the town council has recognised the hard work of the four-person amenity committee and by them agreeing to fund the lights it is a great weight off our shoulders.

“We have agreed to manage the installation but it does mean we can put more of our efforts into seeking funding for the Christmas event itself, which attracts many thousands.”

Last Christmas plans had been in place to welcome a mini zoo to the town as well as reindeers, a snow globe and Santa. After its cancellation the committee vowed to bring the event back “bigger and better” in 2016 – and it’s looking for more support to help this happen.

“There are a few businesses in the town who support this event, but we are always needing more so we would hope by the town council leading the way many will follow,” said Mr Stringer.

To raise money for the celebrations the committee is holding a craft fayre and music night.

The fayre will take place on Saturday, June 18, between 9.30am and 2pm.

Stalls cost £10 and to reserve one, or find out more about the event, contact markethalloffice@ btconnect.com

The committee is also planning a music night, with a buffet, at the Falcon Club on Friday, July 8.

Tickets will cost £5 and are available from Sam Pollen on 07770876201 or by emailing markethalloffice@ btconnect.com
