Flower group wilts after 64 years

AFTER 64 years, Hensingham Hospital Chrysanthemum Society has decided to call it a day.

It was first set up in 1938, but due to falling interest in the hobby of growing Chrysanthemums and a reduction in committee members, the Society has now ended.

Over the years the Society has donated money from its annual show to different departments in the local hospital.

The Society’s remaining balance of £2,500 was recently donated to the Accident & Emergency Department at the West Cumberland Hospital, which has bought equipment to enable patients to administer their own pain-relieving medication.

Members of the committee are pictured here with the equipment and members of the A & E team.

Pictured, from the left, are: Student Nurse Rooke, Brian Routledge, Mary Shaw, Bob Shaw, Mrs Halfpenny, Mr Green A & E Consultant, Sister Quinn, Hilda Ivison, Staff Nurse Foster and Bill Ivison.

Missing from the picture was committee member, Eric Mitchell.
