THE festive smells of mulled wine and mince pies wafted around Whitehaven’s James Street last Saturday.
Traders along the street held a Christmas event to entice shoppers further down into the market place.
Also attending were Cowpers School of Dance, who gave a show in the United Reformed Church, alongside Whitehaven WI Christmas Country Market. The church also held a carol and lunchtime service.
Martin Gerrish, of The Tenth Bull shop, said: “Saturday was very wet and windy but many people bravely turned out to meet Santa and Mary the Fairie children’s entertainer.
“The traders would like to thank Dawn of DJ Sounds who battled the elements to provide a splendid karaoke challenge with prizes from Milltech Computers and The Tenth Bull. The Rosehill Youth also sang beautifully.’’
Members of the James Street Traders Association also wanted to thank Geoff Parker for the loan of his lorry without which the show would not have gone on!
Julie Palmer, of the Barber Shop, who provided the mulled wine and mince pies, said: “Considering the weather it was a very successful day.
“We hope to hold this event annually as well as organise something in the summer.’’
Rev Geoffrey Davis, minister at the URC, said: “The weather was atrocious but the event went very well. It was a good opportunity for the community to come together and share the Christmas message.”
