Remote Eskdale pub wows real ale judges

ONE of West Cumbria’s most remote pubs has been named the pub of the season.

The Woolpack Inn, Eskdale, is owned by Dave Bailey and Ann Wedgwood and has won the accolade of Pub of the Season for Autumn 2008 by CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale).

Part of the inn’s charm, say judges, is in its quiet setting and closeness to some of Lakeland’s best fell walks, including Scafell Pike.

After experimenting with beers from around the country, the Woolpack now only sells beers from Cumbrian microbreweries.

And three years ago, Dave set up the Hardknott brewery on the pub premises, and the first brew was supped at Christmas 2005. There are usually two from their own range of seven beers on sale at any time.

CAMRA branch chairman Stephen Walker said: “Dave and Ann have found a winning formula that works for their pub, and while building up their business they have also done a lot to promote real ale in West Cumbria.”

An award will be made to Dave and Ann on Friday, November 21, during the West Cumbria Beer Festival in Whitehaven Civic Hall.

The opening times are noon to 4.30pm and 6pm to 11pm on November 21 and noon to 4.40pm and 6pm to 11pm on November 22.

Entry is £2.50 for afternoon sessions and £3.50 for evenings.
