Sports reign supreme

THE usual mix of sports, stalls, fun and games were on offer at Cleator Moor Sports on Saturday.
And although the weather didn’t do the event any favours, those who braved the elements had an enjoyable day at the annual event.
“We had about 500 through the gates, which was about half as many as we would’ve expected had the weather been decent,” said secretary Elwyn Evans.
“If it had been held on the Sunday or Monday, it would have been ideal, but the weather unfortunately was typically British and wasn’t kind to us on the day.”
The adverse weather meant that the circus, which should have been a highlight of the day, had to be cancelled.
“We looked at the weather on Friday night and it just wouldn’t have been possible to put up the circus tent – we had enough trouble putting up our own gazebos and tents.
“Cleator Moor Town Council did sponsor the circus, which we thank them for, but we had to ask the circus not to travel because if they’d have come up from Blackpool and found they couldn’t go ahead, we’d have still had to pay for it.”
The events that did go ahead included the regular hound trails and fell races (see sports section for results), foot races, dog show and cycling.
Flimby’s James Crellin, with Tess, was named Champion Lurcher, with Kendal man Ian Braithwaite’s Shadow in reserve. S Robinson’s Milly was top terrier, with Whitehaven man George Norman’s Todd in reserve.
“I’d like to thank everyone who turned up for their support, and to the organisations who sponsored us. The army cadets also did an excellent job of stewarding the event, and Cleator Moor Brass were on top form in this, the first time they have played at the Sports.
“But in future, we do need more support – both from people through the gates and business offering sponsorship – if this event is to continue.”
