ALL roads led to Sorrowstones Farm, Santon, on Saturday when almost 1,000 people gathered to compete and spectate at the Young Farmers Northern District Field Day.
With over 70 classes on the day there was plenty to do and see. Some of the highlights of the day were the sheep shearing, where some very woolly Dorsets were sheared most successfully by James Hodgson of Lamplugh who won both the machine and hand shearing classes; line dancing won by Kirklinton whose member Sarah Scott, also won the nail art; the Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling won by Paul Murray, Greysouthen; John Harrington, Caldbeck; Joe Lowry, Drigg; Ellen Groat, Egremont; Katie Wigham from Kiklinton.
There was a magnificent display of baking, chutney’s and crafts in the Industrial Section where Drigg were placed third overall, Raughton head 2nd and Caldbeck 1st.
Caldbeck won the Margaret Dalton Flower Arranging Trophy and Carlisle won the Kyle Cup for cookery. Raughton Head’s men and women’s team both provided an exciting finale to the day when they won the Willie Bendle and Andre Fisher Trophies for the ladies and men’s Tug-of-War.
When all the results were added up after a hectic day of competition, Caldbeck YFC won with 1259 points, Raughton Head 2nd 1110 points, Drigg third 1089 points and Carlisle 4th on 1048 points.
The Santon Bridge event was by kind permission of Mr & Mrs Geoff Nanson. the main sponsors of the day - Low Level Waste Repository, West Lakeland Veterinary Centre, Mitchell's Livestock Auction and the Environment Agency.
The Southern District Field Day will be held this Saturday at Gutterby Farm, Whitbeck, Millom, at 10am.
