Mayfield’s young stars wow crowd

WHITEHAVEN’S Mayfield School really rocks!
They scooped five awards at the annual Rock Challenge, held at Carlisle’s Sands Centre, for their circus-themed show.
Schools from across the county took part in the dance event.
Mayfield came second overall as well as winning awards for Spirit of Rock Challenge, School Community Support, Concept Interpretation and Performers’ Choice (when all the schools vote for their favourite show).
“To come second for us is fantastic,” said Tracy Teasdale, the head’s secretary.
“We are all delighted. The kids have worked very hard and we are very proud of them.”
She said all the other secondary schools supported Mayfield really well on the day.
There were more than 50 taking in part in their show, with the driving force being teachers Liz Condron, Janice McCracken and Carolyn Westnedge.
Meanwhile, the joint show put together by St Benedict’s and Whitehaven schools won two awards: Most Entertaining Performance and Student Leadership.
St Benedict’s School was also presented with a special award because it was the 10th year that the school has been involved in the Rock Challenge.
Nicola Skillen, performing arts teacher at St Benedict’s, said: “We didn’t get placed this year unfortunately but it was fantastic, the kids did brilliantly.”
