Michelle’s got her future all sewn up

AN art student in Millom is hoping to have her exams all sewn up with stylish dresses made from old suits, crisp packets and newspapers.
Michelle Broome is studying art and craft among her A Levels at Millom School’s sixth form.
The 18-year-old’s collection was inspired by the work of designer Gary Harvey, who makes clothing from recycled materials, including old jeans.
After choosing to focus on a fashion theme for her coursework, she set about making her own creations.
She said: “My topic was fashion and I decided to look at future fashion. I found an artist called Gary Harvey, who works with different materials which inspired my work.
“For the fashion as art topic I worked through the years, taking in a bit of everything.”
Deputy head girl Miss Broome said the topic of future fashion made her consider the materials from which people might have to make clothes in the future.
One dress is made from the sleeves of suit jackets, one is woven from newspapers, including the Evening Mail’s sister title, the Whitehaven News, and another is made from crisp packets and bottle tops.
Even though the dresses are made from rubbish and recycled materials, Miss Broome says the dresses can be worn, but you might not catch her wearing them on a night out.
She said: “The dresses took about a month or so to design and make, the dress made from crisp packets took the longest to make.
“My favourite is definitely the one made from crisp packets, I don’t know how many packets I used in it.
“I had to make my friends eat them, despite their being so many packets, I think I only ate about one bag.”
Despite her unique creations, Miss Broome is not planning a future in fashion.
She said: “I’d like to study business and marketing at Lancaster if I do well enough in my exams.”
Head of Millom School, Ian Smith, said: “Michelle is a real asset and we’re lucky to have her in the sixth form community.”
The dresses are on show in Millom School’s reception.
