Emergency services searched Maryport harbour and the banks of the River Ellen last night after reports of “persons in difficulty”.
Police, Maryport Inshore Rescue and the town’s coast guard found clothing at the bottom of Moat Hill but their owner has still not been found.
The police were first on the scene after receiving a call from a concerned member of the public at 8.12pm.
A police spokeswoman said the caller believed she had heard someone calling out.
Volunteers from the town’s inshore lifeboat then conducted a search of the outer and inner harbours while the rest of the team combed the banks of the river along with members of the Maryport Coast Guard.
A spokesman from Maryport Rescue said: “Nothing else or no persons were found after a thorough sweep of search area.”
