Lottery cash for a happy Maryport

Schools in Maryport and surrounding villages have been given £10,000 to promote health and happiness in the town.

The Lottery cash, from Awards for All, was given to the Maryport Extended Schools Partnership, which represents every school in the town and primary schools in Flimby, Dearham, Crosscanonby and Broughton Moor.

Each school will be given money to run activities during the summer term which would not normally be available.

Broughton Moor has decided to run an after-school karate class while Ewanrigg is planning zumba classes.

Other schools are looking at courses on bushcraft and survival teaching.

Nicola Woolley, partnership co-ordinator, said the project would be Maryport's Olympic effort and would culminate in a free fun day of activities at Netherhall Community Sports Centre on July 9.
