And the striker is not ruling out a return to Borough Park when his contract with League Two side Crewe comes to an end this summer.

Connerton is hoping to stay in the professional game and earn a deal with a Football League side but if that fails Darren Edmondson will be top of his list of managers to call.

Connerton said it was an honour to score the winning goal at Worcester, adding: “To score the goal that guaranteed Workington stayed up is incredible.

“I missed a sitter against Histon but continued to believe in myself and to end my spell with the winning goal was special.

“It was a great way to finish off a crazy season. I didn’t lose a game while at Workington, and that is testament to the fantastic morale within the squad.”

Connerton has backed boss Edmondson to improve Workington’s fortunes after the 40-year-old agreed terms to a new two-year contract.

The hitman said: “Darren is definitely the right man to take the club forward. He’s a great manager and deserves his new deal.

“And who knows, I might be back too.

“I will be leaving Crewe but I’d like to stay in the professional game if I can.

“If things don’t work out then Workington is the only part-time club I would want to join.

“The dressing room is a great place to be and the players are a fantastic bunch. It has been great to play with them and I wouldn’t rule it out in the future.

“But I have to try to stay in the professional game. If I don’t try I’ll never know if I can make it.”
