Happy to support this hospital champion

CENEWHOSO1010 SIR – I am writing to lend my support to retired orthopaedic consultant Mr Mahesh Debar’s letter (The Whitehaven News, October 12) in which he expressed his considerable concerns regarding the depleted services at West Cumberland Hospital.

The lessons to be learned from teachers’ strike

ceennerlitter1710 SIR – Our schools are essential for our future. Schools are not places where parents and carers can conveniently park children during the working day, somewhere warm and dry and where they will be looked after and fed. Schools are places of teaching and learning where young minds are developed, where ideas are formed and creativity is stimulated.

Politicians must demand a halt to transfer of hospital services

CENEWHOSO1010 SIR – There are a number of questions relating to the West Cumberland Hospital (WCH) that need very clear answers. Why are the managers of the North Cumbria University Hospital Trust unwilling to discuss these in public?

Elaine Woodburn replies to replies...

SIR – I anticipated a vigorous response to my letter last week, but it’s unfortunate that some seem to have misinterpreted my words.

‘Elected mayor would be best for Copeland’

cecopeballot SIR – What we have at the moment ‘controlling’ Copeland is a leader of the council underpinned by the Executive, both of which are self-supporting and to the casual observer, immoveable.

Sorting out hen harrier riddle

henhrmw SIR – Chris Collett of the RSPB concludes that hen harriers have become “functionally extinct” (“Harried into extinction by gun-happy keepers? RSPB blames grouse moor managers for birds decline”, The Whitehaven News, September 26).

Councillors call for Home Group to reverse out of garage decision

SIR – We find ourselves having to write a letter to air our disgust about Home Group and their decision to demolish all the garages they own in Egremont, soon to be followed by those in Hensingham.

How Copeland Council answers its critics

cewoodyburn1909 SIR – We are the focus of a lot of letters at the moment, and that’s understandable. But some of the inaccuracies in these letters is less so.

Core fights for beach signs

SIR – Your paper’s coverage of Core’s campaign for signs advising of the presence of radioactive particles to be erected on West Cumbrian beaches has, as expected, drawn the usual complacent and poorly informed comments from Copeland’s shakers and movers.

Pillage of our hospital services hits us all – not just Sellafield

SIR – The shambles that is West Cumberland Hospital lingers on and on, and I for one get rather angry at the rape and pillage of our local health service.

Great cause, great support

CEPARKINSONS190901 SIR – On behalf of a very grateful West Cumbrian Parkinson’s community, can I please take this opportunity to thank a number of people and companies who have made everlasting memories for us in the last week.

‘Out with the dictatorial cabinet – and in with an elected mayor’

stvegfiffths SIR – Happy to report a safe return to Whitehaven after many weeks of sunshine with family in Europe. Playing catch-up with back copies of The Whitehaven News and see no change to the Copeland scene with ever-growing, and deserved, criticism of our Copeland Borough Council councillors and senior officers. No sign of any councillor volunteering a cut in their generous allowances/expenses, but I haven’t caught up with all the back copies yet. Do tell if I’m going to be pleasantly surprised.

Let’s use our local talent

ceswintolets SIR – What direction are Whitehaven RLFC going in, I ask. The last two home games against Keighley and Swinton respectively were nothing short of disgraceful. There appeared to be a lack of heart and effort from certain players.

Hospital changes made without consultation: we demand answers

SIR – People of West Cumbria: It is time, again, to demand some answers. The Whitehaven News’ story last week (“Fears Over Patient Moves”), is factually correct.SIR – After the dramatic Commons defeat of David Cameron, following his intense struggle to achieve the greatest possible consensus for military action against the Assad regime in Syria, we can only hope that he indeed truly ‘gets it’... insofar as his ego will allow.
