How Copeland Council answers its critics

cewoodyburn1909 SIR – We are the focus of a lot of letters at the moment, and that’s understandable. But some of the inaccuracies in these letters is less so.

Core fights for beach signs

SIR – Your paper’s coverage of Core’s campaign for signs advising of the presence of radioactive particles to be erected on West Cumbrian beaches has, as expected, drawn the usual complacent and poorly informed comments from Copeland’s shakers and movers.

Pillage of our hospital services hits us all – not just Sellafield

SIR – The shambles that is West Cumberland Hospital lingers on and on, and I for one get rather angry at the rape and pillage of our local health service.

Great cause, great support

CEPARKINSONS190901 SIR – On behalf of a very grateful West Cumbrian Parkinson’s community, can I please take this opportunity to thank a number of people and companies who have made everlasting memories for us in the last week.

‘Out with the dictatorial cabinet – and in with an elected mayor’

stvegfiffths SIR – Happy to report a safe return to Whitehaven after many weeks of sunshine with family in Europe. Playing catch-up with back copies of The Whitehaven News and see no change to the Copeland scene with ever-growing, and deserved, criticism of our Copeland Borough Council councillors and senior officers. No sign of any councillor volunteering a cut in their generous allowances/expenses, but I haven’t caught up with all the back copies yet. Do tell if I’m going to be pleasantly surprised.

Let’s use our local talent

ceswintolets SIR – What direction are Whitehaven RLFC going in, I ask. The last two home games against Keighley and Swinton respectively were nothing short of disgraceful. There appeared to be a lack of heart and effort from certain players.

Hospital changes made without consultation: we demand answers

SIR – People of West Cumbria: It is time, again, to demand some answers. The Whitehaven News’ story last week (“Fears Over Patient Moves”), is factually correct.SIR – After the dramatic Commons defeat of David Cameron, following his intense struggle to achieve the greatest possible consensus for military action against the Assad regime in Syria, we can only hope that he indeed truly ‘gets it’... insofar as his ego will allow.

Local politicians should distance themselves from nuclear industry

cesellafile2908 SIR – I write in response to councillor Tim Knowles’ support of the leader of Copeland Borough Council, Elaine Woodburn, and her criticism of her fellow councillor Phil Greatorex.

Locals and visitors condemn mess in Whitehaven

SIR – I thought I would write to inform you of the mess that was left on Bransty Road, Whitehaven, after landscapers had cut the verge at the side of the road.

Who can run the Civic Hall?

cecivic2208 SIR – If an organisation such as the Freemasons can take over Cleator Moor Civic Hall, keep it open and in an excellent state of repair, even build an extension to the building and run it at a profit thereby providing a much needed resource for the community, why can’t Copeland Council (or some other organisation) do it?

Both sides of political divide leap to the defence of council leader

SIR – Well done to Elaine Woodburn on her response in your letters column to the astonishing attack on her by “fellow” Copeland councillor Phil Greatorex.

Less rosy milestones in Thorp’s 25 years

cethorppond SIR – Your report on the Sellafield’s Thorp reprocessing plant’s 25th anniversary (The Whitehaven News, August 15) contained some omissions.

Forgiving our naval invaders

CELEYTE GULF 1508 SIR – Of the 73 incursions upon the shores of this sceptred isle what is probably unique about the John Paul Jones raid at Whitehaven, I believe, is that it is the only known “invasion” by a foreign power (America) that was eventually pardoned! (“John Paul Jones Raid Was Not the Last Invasion”, The Whitehaven News, August 8).

‘Council endorsement of nuclear industry is a conflict of interest’

SIR – I was astonished to read the very public endorsement by councillors Elaine Woodburn and David Moore for the continuation of the government-owned and contractor-operated (GOCO) model for decommissioning Sellafield (“Fears over Sellafield’s future”, The Whitehaven News, August 8).

SIR – So the North Cumbria NHS Trust has been placed into special measures; however, this comes as no great astonishment to my family.
