Forgiving our naval invaders

CELEYTE GULF 1508 SIR – Of the 73 incursions upon the shores of this sceptred isle what is probably unique about the John Paul Jones raid at Whitehaven, I believe, is that it is the only known “invasion” by a foreign power (America) that was eventually pardoned! (“John Paul Jones Raid Was Not the Last Invasion”, The Whitehaven News, August 8).

‘Council endorsement of nuclear industry is a conflict of interest’

SIR – I was astonished to read the very public endorsement by councillors Elaine Woodburn and David Moore for the continuation of the government-owned and contractor-operated (GOCO) model for decommissioning Sellafield (“Fears over Sellafield’s future”, The Whitehaven News, August 8).

Horrified and ashamed at dying mother’s treatment in hospital

SIR – So the North Cumbria NHS Trust has been placed into special measures; however, this comes as no great astonishment to my family.

Campaign to move from Risley HQ to Sellafield is long overdue

SIR – I wish community leaders well in their campaign for the Risley HQ of Sellafield Ltd to be moved up to West Cumbria, something long overdue (“Firms told: move or lose orders,” The Whitehaven News, July 25).

From Eskdale to Whitehaven: litter-louts leave a blight on green and pleasant land

ceesklitter01 SIR – My sister and I are visiting West Cumbria on holiday from New Zealand and we saw lots of rubbish at the Whitehaven Harbour/Marina area of the town, together with other popular places such as Dalegarth, where we picnicked after a wonderful ride on the La’al Ratty!

Another view in turbine fight

CESADIE1807 SIR – Mr Stephen Shepherd claimed recently he had been victimised by residents over his wind turbine application, so maybe he would like to explain why he has done this to elderly residents in their seventies who suffer from ill health and live opposite one of his fields?

‘Asking OAPs to move bins 500m uphill to a junction is ludicrous’

SIR – We are a retired OAP couple, I will be 70 in a few months, living in the hamlet of Millyeat, near Frizington, and we receive an excellent black bin, brown bin and recycling services from the Copeland Council operatives.

Is this acceptable for children to play in?

cehensoletter 1107 SIR – Copeland Council’s policy of only cutting the grass in open spaces twice a year is turning parks and playing fields into wasteland.

‘Copeland Council has forgotten who it’s meant to be working for’

SIR – You published a piece recently on the Government’s request for ideas on what went wrong with the MRWS.SIR – From next year plastic bags for shoppers in Scotland are to be charged at 5p a bag, and this should be the case in the rest of the UK as most shoppers do not use them twice and there is an environmental problem with these blowing all over the streets. SIR – Re: Toll Bar Cottage Roof. Who do the council think they are? The Congdons cannot be held responsible for other people’s doings all those years ago. If they want the roof changed they should be prepared to pay – the full cost and compensate the Congdons for any inconvenience such as noise.

Hospital changes are too little, too late, says grieving widow

cewch0407 SIR – Just as we were beginning to put behind us the damning findings of last year’s mortality ratings at West Cumberland Hospital, my heart sank as I read the report from the Care Quality Commission on the latest shortcomings there.

Don’t demonise disabled people – support them and their dignity

SIR – In your article regarding ongoing matters relating to Copeland Borough councillor Alistair Norwood’s comments about disabled people (The Whitehaven News, June 6) you quote Coun Norwood as saying: “I stand by my – and my government’s – opinion that the criteria needs to be reassessed.”

Peer pressure for Lord Jack

cejackropes SIR – Regarding the furore surrounding our erstwhile MP Dr Jack Cunningham and two other “noble” lords, it is inexplicable why, if he suspected all along that it was a scam as he would have us believe, that he didn’t immediately confront them with his suspicions instead of listing what he could do on their behalf and how much it would cost them.

Why borough’s verges need a good short back and sides

SIR – I felt I had to write to say what an absolute disgrace Copeland is now looking with the lack of grass cutting due to ‘council cuts’. It really upsets me when driving around in this lovely weather to see the grassed areas and not forgetting communal gardens (eg St Nicholas Gardens on Lowther Street) looking so run down and uncared for.
