Putting our hospital in a critical condition

West Cumberland Hospital photo SIR – The news about North Cumbria University Hospitals Trust and the removal of junior doctors is the final blow. Sir – Those of us, and there are many among us, who opposed the Health & Social Care Bill, botched together by this hapless coalition government, continue to be dismayed at how the NHS is being systematically dismantled in such an insidious way as to create opportunities for corrupt capitalists to cash in on this nation’s heritage.

'I was astounded at similarities'

cedomviol02 SIR – When I read your article about domestic abuse (“Closing the circle of domestic violence”, The Whitehaven News, February 20) I could have been reading about myself. I was astounded at the similarities. Not only was I astounded at the similarities of the abuse but also the similarities of the perpetrator. I endured this treatment for 13 years. I was brought up with the ethos of ‘making the best of a bad job’ and ‘I’d made my bed so I should lie in it’ so that’s what I did and I put up with it. I didn’t realise it was domestic abuse. I think that people, like me at the time, don’t realise what constitutes domestic abuse.

Blots on the landscape

SIR – I see that the county council intends to build more speed humps of asphalt. This could be better used in repairing the potholes, for Whitehaven already seems to have far too many of both.

Pothole critics take dig at wrong target

cepoth130201 SIR – In response to Rob Romano’s comment regarding gas workers fixing potholes in Queen Street, Whitehaven (The Whitehaven News, letters, February 6), I am sure Copeland Council would have been over the moon to see the holes filled, but would gas customers outside Copeland want to pay for it? Probably not.
