The nuclear waste debate

cenwaste1207 SIR – I write in reply to a letter from Coun Tim Knowles (The Whitehaven News, June 28), in which he discusses the results of public polling by MRWS [the Managing Radioactive Waste Safely partnership] to promote continuing with investigations for radioactive waste storage.

Do we really need seven council leaders – and 359 councillors?

SIR – It was interesting to read the response by the director of service for Copeland Borough Council, Pat Graham (a paid council adviser), to my letter (The Whitehaven News, June 28) referring to changes to bins collections in order generate further savings.SIR – I recently wrote in The Whitehaven News about motorcyclists passing through Bigrigg village where I live.

A mum’s special word of thanks

CETORTCHSIMMO SIR – I would just like to say a HUGE thank you to all the people of Whitehaven for the warm welcome you gave my son James Simpson and his family when he ran with the Olympic torch last Thursday through Whitehaven.

A county approach to refuse services would be more efficient

SIR – I read your report “More changes to bin collections” (The Whitehaven News, June 21) in which the council is to consult on efficiency savings which will affect every householder in Copeland to save the council £120,000, or nine per cent of the current £1,3200,000 cost of the service, which of course is quite a lot of money funding a frontline service.

Big Society do, big thank you

CEJUBSNECK05 SIR – I am writing to ask if you would print this letter in your newspaper to say a big thank you for all those who helped at the Sneckyeat Fun Day on June 6.

‘GPs are well rewarded but by striking they lose our respect’

SIR – On Thursday our GPs will not be working. They are on strike. At a time when we all know that the economy of the world, the country and most importantly the area is in crisis, they choose to strike to support a pension provision that most of us can only dream of as a salary, much less a pension.SIR – I find I am not alone in expressing disbelief of Seascale Parish Council being so insensitive as to draw attention to the West Cumbria shootings by mounting what is, to all intents and purposes, a headstone, in a children’s play area.

A mystery no more

cebraystowe2106 SIR – The photograph of Braystones Tower in last week’s Whitehaven News helped me solve a mystery of where a family photo was taken.

Tower of strength – and joy

cebrayflag SIR – What a delight it was to see the Union Jack flying from Braystones Tower over the Diamond Jubilee weekend – and for the tower to be lit at night.

Crying out for an elected mayor after just fiddling on the fringes

SIR – I found Chris Whiteside’s recent letter totally hilarious as I did Coun Haraldsen’s, calling for an elected mayor in your May 17 edition.

Power to change council is in people’s hands at local election

SIR – Following on from Coun Norwood’s letter (The Whitehaven News, May 24) there is one further point to be made, which is that some of the attitudes displayed in the letters published the previous week are a perfect illustration of what can go wrong with a council where one political group – whichever one it is – has been in control for far too long.

Two viable (invisible) options

Savings tips for NHS bosses – why stop at microwave food?

SIR – So health bosses think it is a good idea to have microwaved food for the patients, even though the Government is actively promoting the cooking of fresh food as a more healthy option than processed foods, which in many cases are high in cholesterol. SIR – I am a resident of Bigrigg, near one of the main A595 roads en route from Whitehaven through to Egremont.

We must have confidence in our councillors’ ability to negotiate

SIR – It was both unfortunate and somewhat misguided of local Tory councillor Stephen Haraldsen to highlight conflicts of interest in local government with a personal attack on my colleague, Coun Elaine Woodburn.

Why stand for election if you cannot weather the storm..?

SIR – I read with dismay the letter from ‘A disgruntled Labour Councillor’ (The Whitehaven News, letters, May 3). particularly as the country was awaiting the results of local elections nationwide.

Copeland Council leader called to account – and answers critics

ceew2604 SIR – The frankly shameful way in which Copeland Borough Council’s leadership has tried to absolve itself of blame for the stadium fiasco is almost as embarrassing as the fiasco itself.

A nail in Whitehaven’s coffin

CEPARTOBYP0305 SIR – Whatever the rights and wrongs of most of the proposals in the “Economic Blueprint” described by the Energy Coast partnership, one thing is certain – the proposed £40 million Whitehaven bypass would be the final nail in the coffin for economic life in the town.
