Pylons debate: what happens next

SIR – Over the last ten weeks, National Grid has asked local authorities, important organisations and interested members of the public for their feedback on our initial proposals for connecting new energy generation projects in Cumbria and the important issues they feel we should consider.

POWER: New pylons might be part of the West Cumbria skyline if a new nuclear build takes place at Sellafield.

This initial consultation closed on July 19.

We have been pleased with the level and quality of feedback we have received and would like to thank all those organisations and individuals who took the time to respond.

This engagement will help us understand the key issues interested parties feel we should address in developing the project further.

Once we have taken the time to review and consider all feedback, we will produce a Strategic Options Report, explaining why we have chosen which option or options we will take forward for further development, as well as why we have decided not to progress the other options being considered.

Although the deadline for commenting on initial proposals has now passed, anyone wishing to stay in contact with the North West Coast Connections project as it progresses is invited to register their details on the project website: www.northwestcoastconnections. com. Alternatively, if you have any queries please do contact the project team direct using any one of the following methods: Freephone: 0800 876 6990; Email nationalgrid@ northwestcoastconnections.com; Freepost: FREEPOST NG NWCC.

The next stage of the development process will see us begin to look at routeing options. It is at this point we will start to consult intensively with communities and will hold public events that give people the chance to meet members of the North West Coast Connections team to discuss the project in more detail.

This is expected to take place in 2013 and will be well publicised in advance.
