SIR – Re Mrs Mavis Gaskell’s letter about the new Egremont Library (The Whitehaven News, July 5), I hope that Coun Gary Strong was able to address her concerns to her satisfaction. However, I would like to pick up on a couple of statements she made.

While few people wanted to see the old Charles Edmonds Girls School demolished, the fact is that it has gone. Mrs Gaskell’s comment that the library is a “cramped cowshed structure” is, I feel, not only unfair but also something of an insult to the ladies who work there.

Up until April this year, at least 268 libraries were either under threat or had been lost, so we should be thankful for the fact that Cumbria County Council was willing to invest in a new-build for Egremont when many areas had already lost the facility. I, as a borrower, think we should be proud of our modern, clean and light library and I know many other who feel the same way.

SIR – I would like to support Mavis Gaskell’s efforts to get disabled parking within easy reach of the new library at West Lakes Academy.

How could the plans have been passed without the provision of disabled parking for the library, instead of the one (allegedly) for the library, too far away for disabled people to walk?

Coun Strong’s sarcasm wasn’t needed in his reply.
