Keswick’s mardi gras day

Talent: Jazz pianist Geoff Barnhart playing Harlem stride

KESWICK’S streets come alive today as revellers take to the streets to take part in the town’s own mardi gras.

The street parade, which starts at 10am, is only one of the highlights of the 13th Jennings Keswick Jazz Festival.

The festival is the chance to enjoy every type of jazz, from traditional to more modern sounds.

Other events to watch out for include: Jim Fryer, Enrico Tomasso with the Kid Boyd Jazz Band at the Alhambra Cinema at 12noon today; the Keith Nichols Blue Five at Keswick Labour Club at 8pm; Phil Mason’s New Orleans All-Stars with Christine Tyrrell at Rawnsley Hall at 8pm. Tomorrow: Spicy Advice Ragtime Band at the Braithwaite Institute at 3pm; Jeff Barnhart’s British Band at Braithwaite Institute at 8pm; the Colin Galbraith Quintet featuring Catherine Sewell and Victoria Hesketh at the Queen’s Hotel at 8pm.

Every event at Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake has sold out but stroller badges are available for other events around the town.

The festival office – for passes and information – is located in the centre of Keswick on Central Car Park Road and is open daily until Monday.

A network of three different jazzbus routes is in operation, together with an on-call wheelchair-accessible service. Both these services are free to jazz festival ticket holders.
