MRS Graham welcomed members to our April meeting. A special welcome was given to new members Louise Hetherington and Sheila Hemsley.
Apologies were received and the minutes of the March meeting signed. The “Pea, Pie and Pud” evening at Lamplugh WI was very enjoyable, good fun and food.
Sue Davidson gave the delegate’s report of the spring council meeting.
Bigrigg Village Hall committee has agreed to the planting of a bush to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee; Ann Rothery has made a lovely card for the Federation competition.
Our “Big Walk, Little Splash” challenge began on April 15 with the Federation Walk “Whitehaven Through the Looking Glass”. We were to keep reports and photos of walks which Christine Stubbings will make into a journal.
Ruth Banks told us that Pennies for Friendship have been sent. It was proposed that we have a craft day, Leslie Rutherford has volunteered to act as co-ordinator.
The County News told us of several celebrations for the Diamond Jubilee: there will be afternoon tea in Penrith, luncheon at Greenhill Hotel, a Coronation memorabilia exhibition and a card competition.
Mrs Graham introduced Lorraine Hodgkinson who spoke on western herbal medicine. Lorraine told us a little of the history of herbal medicine, including Thomas Culpepper.
She is a qualified western and Chinese herbal practitioner; she trained for several years in both disciplines. The properties and applications of various herbs were explained with case studies to illustrate.
This talk was very interesting and caused a lot of discussion.
Ann Rothery won the competition for an old medicine bottle.
