Whitehaven Flower Club

LET us entertain you – that was the theme for the October meeting of Whitehaven Flower Club and stepping forward to do just that by creating some stunning and varied floral displays were members Esther Clements, Glenys Oxley and Alison Lowe.
After a welcome from chairman Vivien Postlethwaite the first demonstrator, Esther took to the stage carrying a pink mannequin which she proceeded to adorn with two very pretty arrangements using beautiful pink roses, finally adding a matching fascinator with pink feathers to complete the picture.
Esther, appropriately dressed in pink, has been fundraising for the Breast Cancer Research charity for many years and related tales of the numerous pink-themed events she had attended. By the end of the afternoon all members were wearing pink ribbons and had made donations to the cause.
Glenys chose “Inspirations” as her theme and impressed with some elegant designs using her favourite glass containers. Her first design had sedum in the base then a varied collection of dried foliage in autumnal colours with twisted hazel and beautiful Mango calla lilies. She created an elegant modern arrangement by filling a tall cylindrical glass container with black gravel adding beautiful full-bloom white roses and lime green foliage. Glenys accompanied her demonstration with stories of her currently hectic life, with a daughter expecting her first child and a grandson serving in Afghanistan.
Alison’s arrangement, entitled Total Profusion, used a wonderful collection of flowers and foliage from her own garden on a trellis structure she had designed. She used hardy fuchsias, hydrangeas and every colour of dahlia and anemone. Alison has a large garden, a woodland area, an orchard, keeps hens and looks after donkeys.
All present were impressed by the talent of fellow members who created a stage full of beautiful arrangements and entertained with interesting stories.
The next meeting is on Friday, November 9 at 7. 30pm at Rosehill Theatre when John Dalton will demonstrate “The Holly and the Ivy”.
Tickets costing £7 and can be booked by calling 01946 820560.
