Waberthwaite WI

THE ladies of Waberthwaite WI reached the summits of 40 Wainwright peaks at their May meeting without leaving their seats!

The speaker for the evening was Mr Gillett, who with the clever use of camera and computer, took us on a journey around the Lake District, starting with a ‘Duddon Panorama’ – the view of the Coniston Fells and beyond from Askam Pier on the Duddon Estuary.

Mr Gillett described the panorama from the Duddon estuary as ‘magic’ pointing out five of the six highest peaks in Lakeland and reminding us of Wordsworth’s description of the view from Black Combe.

Our evening’s tour took us on a series of walks starting in Dunnerdale, over to Wasdale and the Scafells, into Langdale, the Coniston range and Helvellyn via Striding Edge accompanied by a lovely musical selection.

Everyone was entranced by the slide show and Mrs Winzor gave a vote of thanks on our behalf.

Before our well-deserved supper we had several points of business. Mrs Winzor gave an update on the arrangements for the village celebrations for the Diamond Jubilee and we were delighted to hear that the Junior Royal Holborn Hill Band were to play during our village lunch and before the children’s sports.

We discussed the resolutions to be discussed at the NFWI AGM, read the County News and discussed venues for our visit during the summer. Mrs Hastings had organised a meeting of our lunch club at the Woodlands tea room at Santon Bridge. Competition winners were Mrs Winzor, Mrs Smith and Mrs Jones and the raffle was won by Mrs Hastings, Mrs Southward, Mrs Steele and Mrs Jones.
