Variety show promises a night to remember

A TOP line-up has been confirmed for a popular annual charity fundraiser.

B&J Promotions – Brenda Holliday from High Harrington and Jackie Eve from Whitehaven – present their 10th annual variety concert, Reach Out, at Workington’s Carnegie Theatre on Sunday, October 21 (7.30pm).

Proceeds go to West Cumbria Hospice at Home in its 25th anniversary year.

On the bill are versatile vocalist Maria Morton, king of swing Matthew Pagan and musical maestros Etoile String Quartet.

Popular local entertainer Derek Thompson is compère for the evening and Lakeland Studio of Dance and Performing Arts will treat the crowd to two numbers.

Maria comes from a musical family and, as her father was a founder member of Whitehaven Theatre Group, started treading the boards at an early age and has since been successful in many musical festivals around the north of England.

She is now involved with Whitehaven Theatre of Youth and has directed their last three productions.

In Reach Out, she will be performing a programme including a Carpenters medley and Adele’s Rolling in the Deep. She will also perform the finalé number of Reach Out and Touch Somebody’s Hand.

Nineteen-year-old Matthew, from Carlisle, started singing in 2009 when he was runner-up in Cumbria’s Got Talent, which led to him performing all over the country.

A former member of StagedRight Youth Theatre, he also plays guitar and piano and will spend the first half of his set performing swing number and the second with musical theatre.

Etoile String Quartet is husband and wife, Scott and Mary-Lou Miller on first violin and viola respectively, Corinne Redman-Stewart on second violin and Jake Cardigan on cello.

Although they enjoy the classics, they move away from the traditional string quartet and have arranged some more up-to-date music.

In Reach Out, they will offer a diverse selection, from Danse des Mirlitons from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker to the theme from The Simpsons!

Tickets are £8 and are available from The Carnegie’s box office on 01900 602122.
