Take a nostalgic journey down memory lane

TAKE a trip down memory lane in the latest exhibition at The Beacon, in Whitehaven.
On the High Street runs from February 19 until April 3.
It promises a nostalgic exhibition which will take you back to a time when the local corner shop was the focal point of community life; when the old enamelled advertising signs dominated the high streets and when advertising campaigns had slogans like An Oxo a day keeps illness away.
On display will be photographs, produced by INfocus, from the museum collection as well as photos from the photography group’s own collection.
Visitors will be treated to an assortment of original enamel signs from the Victorian era up until the mid 20th century.
For residents of the Whitehaven area, the exhibition will bring back memories of daily trips to the local shops such as Walter Willsons grocers in Market Place, Dalzell’s Butchers on King Street and Johnson’s Dry Cleaners on Lowther Street, to name a few.
The Beacon’s curator, Charlotte Stead, said: “This exhibition will have a really nostalgic feel to it. It will be a great chance to see original enamel signs alongside the printed old photographs of Whitehaven.”
