Festival 2011: Local stars serve up a musical feast

WHITEHAVEN may have been awash with headline acts over the festival weekend, but the best of the local music did the area proud with a feast of fantastic live music.
The harbourside CFM and acoustic stages were full to the brim with musicians from the talented West Cumbrian scene.
And local rockers Mazzoni had a prime slot, supporting the legendary Madness on the Main Stage on Saturday night.
The band – Mark Rothery, Steven Tubman, Mike Proud, Lee Shackley and Gavin Amor – played a well-received 30-minute set in front of their hometown crowd, performing Another Rainy Day, Wolf Cried Boy, That Blues Tune, Ronnie’s Slip Ons, Wasted and Shine Your Love.
“We were really pleased with how it went,” said singer Mark.
“We were slightly nervous beforehand as to how it was going to go down as, although we were in our home town, it was Madness’ crowd at the end of the day.
“But from the second that we walked on stage, and the cheers we got as we walked out, we felt a bit more at ease.
“The crowd was absolutely amazing and we are beyond appreciative of the support that we got from them.
“We had loads of positive feedback after the gig and in past couple of days so the set seems to have gone down well. All in all a totally unforgettable experience.”
On Friday, the CFM Stage featured Claire Jackson, Garry Kennedy (who also played with his full band on Saturday), Jade Ashcroft, The Coal House Fairies, Callum Hurrell, Joe Riley & Aaron George, Tom Taylor, The Proudbone Project and Phil Haslehurst.
The acoustic stage on Saturday featured Adam Amor and Roy Robson – who were playing as X-Factor judge Louis Walsh wandered past – along with David Park and Maudy.
And the Madness warm-up show on Saturday on the CFM Stage hosted The Lottery Winners, Gavin McKew, Emma Dockeray and The House of Three Hands.
“The whole weekend was a great success,” said Danny Maudling, of The Mighty Boof Promotions, who booked all the music and co-organised the Razorlight gig on Sunday.
“We were really happy to see the reaction, and the people of Whitehaven, as always, gave us fantastic support.
“It was nice to welcome a few newcomers to the line-up, like The Coal House Fairies, Joe Riley & Aaron George and Tom Taylor, along with our established acts. We’d like to thank Gerard Richardson for giving us the opportunity to organise the music and we’re glad it all went down well.”
