Some entente cordial

THERE’S nothing more predictable about the French at rugby than their unpredictability – and the same could be said about their wines. When good they’re brilliant but otherwise a touch average.

Not everybody can afford the French jewels in the crown (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhone) which is why many opt for a “safe” easy-to-drink Aussie.

But the French have caught up with the New World for good value quality wines from less celebrated areas such as Languedoc Rousillon. New technology combined with old methods has transformed the Mediterranean wine tract into the ‘California of France.’ Typical is Arrogant Frog (red and whites) from a fine producer.

Rugby-wise the French often speak of English arrogance. Sacre bleu they kicked us into World Cup touch last Saturday but let’s not be put off drinking their wines.
