Seascale WI

THE president, Mrs Judy Hall, welcomed members to the June meeting.
Mrs Hall said she had apologised to St Cuthbert’s PPC for the incorrect reporting under the photograph of the flower festival which had appeared with the institute’s May report. It had inferred that the WI had provided all the refreshments when, in fact, they had only done the Sunday afternoon.
Final numbers and arrangements for the theatre outing in September were announced. Tea was to be taken at Hundith Hill Hotel afterwards. The coach would be leaving the village at 12.30pm and would drive straight to Keswick.
Mrs Hall said that, having looked at the prices at the Sands Centre, Carlisle, to see a performance of Calendar Girls it had been decided not to proceed but the possibility of seeing a local performance of the same play would be a good alternative.
It was now definite that Seascale WI would be holding the Esk group carol service this year. Members were asked to put the date of Sunday, December 2, in their diaries. The service would be at 2.30pm and would be held in the Methodist Church.
As it was to be the institute’s 90th birthday this year, Mrs Hall asked members if they would like to provide a tree for the village in remembrance of the event. As this was agreed the next step was to ask the parish council regarding the siting and suggestions of what type of tree would be sought.
The speaker for the evening was the Rev Richard Lee who had kindly stepped in as the original speaker was unavailable. Mr Lee spoke very entertainingly about his life prior to joining the services and of his time as a RAF Chaplain. Members were fascinated to hear of all the different countries where he had served and were extremely impressed with how many languages he had learned. Having retired from the RAF he has settled, for the time being, in West Cumbria as team rector of Egremont Parish.
Mr Lee was thanked for his talk by Mrs Barbara Daniel.
The competition, an item of royal memorabilia, was won by Mrs Judy Hall, 2nd Mrs Eireen McClellan and 3rd Mrs Barbara Armstrong.
The tea hostesses, Mrs Doreen Hirst and Mrs Pauline Jago, were thanked.
As the meeting closed members agreed that it had been a very nice evening.
