Organisers reveal top line-up for May festival Add your comments

THE Pigeon Detectives and Happy Mondays legend Bez will headline a star-studded line-up at the second annual At The Playground festival, The Whitehaven News can exclusively reveal.
Tickets go on sale tomorrow for the May 18/19 extravaganza at Whitehaven Rugby Union Club, which will also feature Ocean Colour Scene’s Simon Fowler and Oscar Harrison, Sound of Guns, Twisted Wheel, James Walsh (of Starsailor fame) and The Lottery Winners.
After the success of last year’s debut festival, the organisers The Mighty Boof Promotions promised to come back bigger and better in 2012. They’ve delivered with this week’s announcement of the jam-packed line-up.
As well as the headliners, the festival will feature the best of the local music scene, including acoustic performers and DJs, as well as a Northern Soul clothing tent.
The Boof’s Danny Maudling said: “As last year was our first year, we have learned a lot of valuable lessons and acted on them for this year.
“We got a lot of very positive feedback – for which we thank people for – and we have acted on it. The tents are bigger and the bar situation has been dealt with; we’ve added an outdoor bar stage, a bigger children’s area, a Northern Soul tent as well as the acoustic and dance tents we had last year.
“We have also added food traders and vendors onsite. We really feel we are giving a great festival experience and, of course, the acts this year are definitely a step up.”
Friday, May 18, will be headlined by The Lottery Winners, Sound of Guns and James Walsh, with The Pigeon Detectives, Simon and Oscar and Twisted Wheel starring the following day.
Saturday’s festivities will be hosted by Bez, the iconic dancer with the recently reformed Happy Mondays and Celebrity Big Brother winner.
The Boof’s David Eldon said: “Bez is travelling up to Whitehaven right after the after-party of the last Happy Mondays tour date.
“We couldn’t believe Bez’s dedication; we thought we’d lost him when The Mondays announced their tour dates for May but, true to his word, he will be there.”
Headliners The Pigeon Detectives are a major coup for The Boof, having enjoyed huge success with two top five albums (Wait For Me in 2007 and Emergency the following year) and a string of hit singles, most notably Romantic Type and I’m Not Sorry.
Elsewhere, Simon and Oscar will perform their much sought-after acoustic set, featuring songs that made Ocean Colour Scene’s name including The Day We Caught The Train and The Riverboat Song.
David added: “Also appearing are Smokin’ Barrels. We had them play Beck Fest two years ago, and since then they have toured with Kasabian and are currently on tour with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, so it’s great to welcome them back to Whitehaven.
“We also have Symphonic Pictures, who are made up of members of Detroit Social Club, who played their very last gig at last year’s At The Playground.”
Tickets go on sale at 9am tomorrow, priced at £12 for the Friday, £25 for the Saturday and £30 for the whole weekend. Under-12s cost £5 per day.
They are available from Threads (Whitehaven), Workington Music Store, Four Play Cycles (Cockermouth), S4 (Carlisle) and Beggar’s Theatre (Millom). A booking fee applies.

Breaking news - Jonathan Eilbeck added to the friday line-up, more to be announced
Good on the organisers for putting on this event (especially in a little town like Whitehaven where everyone complains there is 'nothing to do')! Thank you.
