Millom & District Flower Club

THERE was a good turn-out of members and visitors at the recent meeting of the flower club.

Mary Cunningham, chairman, introduced Judith Wren from Holker Estates, who gave a talk on the Holker Hall Country Show and encouraged members to enter the floral art section.

The demonstrator for the evening was Norma Halpin from Barrow, a favourite at the club. Her theme was “Spring has sprung” and her delightful arrangements incorporated spring flowers and plants. Each one was accompanied by two further arrangements to complement the larger design. At the end of the evening there were 14 arrangements in the raffle. Felicity Wilson thanked Norma on behalf of the club.

The monthly competition for a ‘recycled container’ was judged by David Rylands and the result was 1st Liz Storrs, 2nd Wai King Jeffcoat, 3rd Alice Fitzwilliam.

This year is the sapphire anniversary of Millom and District Flower Club and a special event is planned in June to mark the occasion: An afternoon tea at Millom Palladium followed by a demonstration by top designer, Don Billington from Liverpool. Tickets costing £8.50 will be available at the end of April. This event is open to all. The club have also been invited to decorate Muncaster Castle in May to celebrate the Queen’s diamond jubilee.

During the course of the evening Mary Cunningham was presented with the chairman’s badge to commemorate her 20 years’ service to the club.

A trip to Southport has been arranged for Monday, April 30 to see a floral art demonstration. Contact a committee member if you wish to go.
