Millom and District Flower Club

Millom and District Flower Club celebrated its Sapphire Anniversary at the Millom Palladium recently with an afternoon tea and flower demonstration.
Mary Cunningham, chairman, welcomed 104 members, invited guests and visitors to the event. Muriel Simpson and Pauline Walker, chairman and vice chairman of the area executive of NAFAS, attended along with representatives from Workington, Ulverston, Barrow and Grizebeck Flower Clubs.
Millom Flower Club was founded in 1967 by a small group of like-minded ladies from Millom, the main instigator being Mrs Dunlop wife of local GP Dr Dunlop. Two ladies who were at that inaugural meeting and who are still active members of the club, Brenda Pugh and Mona Shelton, were invited to cut the anniversary cake. Chairman Mary thanked Maureen Gleaves for making the cake, Joan McCafferty for the beautiful table arrangements, The Palladium Staff and the flower club committee for all their hard work behind the scenes.
The Trackside Tea Rooms provided a delicious afternoon tea, after which Don Billington from Liverpool took to the stage. What a treat was in store for all present; the stage looked like a set from a fairy tale at the end of the demonstration and there were 24 arrangements to be won in the raffle. As well as enjoying his great sense of humour it was lovely to hear of his success at Chelsea Flower Show, his new business venture and TV appearances.
A champagne toast and birthday cake finished off the afternoon.
