Gosforth WI

GOSFORTH WI met on May 1, 28 members were present. President Sarah Millard opened the meeting by welcoming Kathleen Cook from Beckermet WI, our area representative.
She reported that she had attended the meeting at WI House in Carlisle when the WI resolution on the need for more midwives was discussed. Gosforth WI had previously discussed the resolution and, by a show of hands, it was agreed that we put on record that we were unanimously in favour of this resolution which would be raised at the NFWI AGM on May 30.
Secretary Beneta Livesey read the report of the last meeting which was signed as a correct record. It was decided to hold the next meeting as planned on Tuesday June 5, despite being the Jubilee Bank Holiday. The expected speaker had withdrawn and it was recognised that many members might have other commitments therefore the evening would be an informal get together for those who were able to come.
Beneta raised the matter of village parking. Much concern was expressed about the dangerous parking outside the shop and cottages which had got steadily worse with no regard to the yellow lines. No police intervention seemed evident. Beneta proposed to write to the parish council reiterating the WI concerns and although members were pessimistic about any reaction it was felt strongly the views of the WI should be reiterated.
Items from the County News were noted. There was to be a Jubilee Celebration Exhibition and talk on Thursday June 28 in WI House. Members were asked to contribute any memorabilia which could be displayed.
For the rest of the evening members were entertained by local singer and musician Billy Bowman. He brought sophisticated recording equipment and with an engaging line of patter between each item regaled the meeting with a continuous rendering of well-known songs from the shows which soon had our feet tapping. After appreciative applause, Hazel Roscoe gave a vote of thanks which was a good reason for more applause. Beneta won the competition for her programme from one of the shows.
The first of our own Jubilee Celebrations was a “Wine and pudding” event in the Public Hall. Members were asked to enter items they could bring. This was a social occasion and there was a quiz. On Bank Holiday Monday, June 4, WI members will join the village parade.
