Florence Centre to paint the town red

PREPARATIONS are well under way for the first PaintFest to be held at Florence Mine, Egremont.

Unique event: Florence’s programme manager Emma McGordon, ahead of the first ever PaintFest

The two-day event (May 26 and 27) will host live music, street performance, stalls, talks and a children’s area.

Programme manager, Emma McGordon, said: “There will be an outdoor acoustic stage, stalls selling a range of products, a projection tent, as well as specially commissioned arts events.

“I’ve commissioned a number of artists, including Dare Dance, who will be performing an outdoor spectacle with paint, plus there will be a special area for children run by a newly-formed St Bees business called Clarted-up, so children can get involved with arts activities.

“There will also be a resident storyteller who will work across the site.”

The festival has been devised to celebrate the launch of Egremont Red, a hand-made artists’ paint which is being produced at Florence through its Paint-Makers co-operative – the first creative business to be housed in what was Western Europe’s last working deep iron ore mine.

Emma said: “Egremont Red is a vivid, distinctive and unique colour that Florence Paint-Makers produce both in oil and pastel form.

“We have been giving out a number of samples to artists both locally and nationally to produce work which will be shown in our gallery throughout the festival.

“We have no idea what to expect as the only remit was that Egremont Red had to be used in the new piece of work in some way.”

Entry to the festival is free and it begins at 10am. PaintFest is still on the look out for food providers for the event. For more information contact Emma on 01946 824946.
