THE Cumbria and North Lancashire Fabian Society welcomed Lord Glasman as speaker to the May meeting in Kendal.
Lord Glasman of ‘Blue Labour’ fame addressed the recently-formed society at the Castle Green Hotel.
The meeting is part of the new branch’s aim of providing a forum and opportunity in the region for debate, with national figures, on the serious issues of the day.
Around 25 members attended from Cockermouth, Carlisle, Blackburn, Lancaster, Morecambe, Skipton and Kendal.
Lord Glasman’s talk was well received and stimulated a lively discussion. It was suggested that there needed to be a greater emphasis on the status of the individual and shared common values and that successive governments had failed to see this and engage with the needs of people and communities.
The issues debated included the idea that society should move to a more local base where business would be funded by regional rather than national banks which is along the lines of the German model and that high street and business banking should be isolated from risky speculative investment banking.
