Whose footprint did Robinson Crusoe find on his island?
But before you answer that, let me just get my QI klaxon on stand-by.
Like many people we answered "Man Friday". The question was posed by our usually erstwhile quizmaster Anthony Payne a few weeks ago. In fact so 'obvious' was the answer that we foolishly didn't even check it. But a sharp-eyed reader mentioned it to me the other day and said she didn't think it was right. It sounded unbelievable but a careful read of the book proves she is right. Crusoe finds a single footprint on the island and it scares him to death. But it's some years later when he finally meets up with 'man Friday'. A number of cannibals come to the island and Crusoe rescues Friday from the marauding mob. Crusoe never finds out who the single footprint belonged to but it was probably one of the visiting cannibals.
