How to write for newspapers

Advice from The Whitehaven News of 1860 is still sound today...

pen
Write briefly!

I found this in an 1860 issue of The Whitehaven News but its advice on how to write for newspapers probably can't be bettered. Particulary point six!

1. Have something to write about. 2. Write plain; dot your i’s; cross your t’s; point sentences; begin with capitals. 3. Write short; to the point; stop when you have done. 4. Write only on one side of the leaf. 5. Read it over; abridge and correct it, until you get it into the shortest space possible. 6. Pay the postage.
