AN ADAPTATION of Elizabeth Gaskell’s classic novel Cranford is being performed at Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake this week.
Regulars at the theatre Sandra Hunt and Rachel Laurence, better known as Hunt & Laurence, will be telling the story and misadventures of Miss Matty Jenkyn and her friends in The Ladies of Cranford in the Studio Theatre from May 28 to 30
Set in a small market town in the early years of Queen Victoria’s reign, The Ladies of Cranford is centred on a group of ladies of a certain age and position in society. Their adventures, from burglars and bankruptcy to marriage and magic, are presented in modern dress, with a beguiling mixture of humour, pathos and astute social comment.
Rachel and Sandra bring The Ladies of Cranford to life in this fond, faithful and funny adaptation, which has delighted audiences all around the country.
Cranford has been a firm favourite with readers since it was first published, in instalments, more than 150 years ago. Its cast of characters found a legion of new admirers through the recent BBC serialisation, and visitors to Theatre by the Lake will meet old friends like the redoubtable Miss Pole, the faithful Martha, mysterious Scottish aristocrat Lady Glenmire and the exotic conjuror Signor Brunoni.
Hunt & Laurence have been performing sell-out shows regularly at Theatre by the Lake which have included: Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads, their world premières of Lady Molly of Scotland Yard and their two one-woman plays – Sandra’s Fast Woman and Rachel’s The Key to the Garden.
It is performed nightly at 8pm, with a 2pm matinée on Wednesday, May 30. Tickets are priced between £12 and £16 from 017687 74411 or www.theatrebythelake.com.
