SHIP LAUNCH AT WHITEHAVEN: On Monday, about a quarter before twelve o’clock, a beautiful new clipper brig was launched from the inner building yard of Messrs L Kennedy and Co., shipbuilders, Whitehaven.
The vessel was named by Miss Lowther the Annie Lowther. The Annie Lowther is a beautiful model, and finely finished. She is about 185 tons O.M., and 136 tons register N.M., and is expected to carry from 250 to 260 tons dead weight, upon an easy draught of water.
She is intended for he coasting and Mediterranean trades, and is owned by Captain Thomas Kelly.

MR E BRAITHWAITE of the Scawfell Hotel, has inaugurated a new era, in the posting line at Seascale.
He has purchased a new vehicle in the shaper of a char-a-banc to run between Seascale and Wastdale Head, Eskdale, and Stanley Ghyll. It has been built to the order of Mr Braithwate and carries 16 passengers, has all the latest improvements, and finished in every way in a first-class style, which is a credit to the builder.
There is some fear of its going through some of the gates on the road to Wastdale Head, and they will have to be widened.
During the season it will be a boon to the visitors, who will have opportunities of seeing the places of interest in the district without as hitherto having to hire a special conveyance.

THE MOTOR VEHICLE INDUSTRY IN WESTMORLAND: It is now a matter of 15 years since the motor industry was introduced into Westmorland in a permanent manner and in that space of time considerable strides have been made in its development.
The other day one of our representatives had the opportunity of noting the advance in connection with the motor works of Mr H J Croft of Kendal and Bowness-on-Windermere.
Mr Croft was one of the first to introduce the push bicycle into Kendal, and soon earned an excellent reputation for the high quality of the machines supplied, which soon became well known among the cycling fraternity as the Victory, a machine entirely manufactured on his own premises.
But with the commencement of the motor industry in the country he saw a greater scope for his business and gradually dropped the cycle trade as a main feature of his business, and he brought the first petrol car into Kendal, a new tri-car which he drove from Coventry.

BACK AT WORK AGAIN: Screen Girls raised a resounding cheer as the first tub of coal was raised for commercial purposes in William Pit, Whitehaven, on Tuesday morning after 18 months’ idleness.
The cheer was in keeping with the feeling of optimism now prevailing in the town, especially among the men and the officials, that this time Whitehaven’s principal industry will win through to prosperity.

CLEATOR MOOR SHOWHOUSE HAS ‘FOUR Ws’ PLAN: Visitors to the special showhouse at Bowthorn Road, Cleator Moor, which will remain open for public inspection until April 21, have been intrigued by the Ryax Four Ws Heating Plan – warmth without waste, without worries, without waiting.
The new heating system, they agree, would seem to be tailor-made for most West Cumberland homes.
The Ryax Warmhome system works off your open fire – using the specially designed back boiler which gets the maximum efficiency out of your ordinary open fire.

EUROPEAN CURRENCY FORECAST: Cumbria’s Euro MP. Sheila Faith, can foresee the day when everyone will be using a European currency rather than the pound.
She told the annual meeting of the Cumbria branch of the European Union of Women, that there was now no chance of Britain pulling out of the EEC.
“By the end of the century we will be able to move around Europe freely and get jobs more easily in Europe” she said.
