THE final orchestral concert in The Sands’ 2010-11 classical season takes place later this month with The Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra.
From one of the oldest orchestras in Russia and one of the world’s largest symphony orchestras, the program features masterpieces by Tchaikovsky, including extracts from Eugene Onegin and Suite from The Nutcracker.
The company which started the future Bolshoi Theatre was founded in 1776.
From the end of the 19th century, the orchestra started to give symphony concerts and these were to play a major role in the development of its professional skills.
In 2001, Maestro Alexander Vedernikov was appointed music director and chief conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre.
Today, the orchestra has about 300 members. Among them are many first class musicians who often perform as soloists and members of ensembles in concert halls in this country and abroad.
The orchestra has made numerous recordings of operas, ballets and symphonic works many of which have received international recognition and high awards.
The show is on May 20. Tickets, £28 to £30 with concessions available, from www.thesandscentre.co.uk or on 01228 625222.
