Amateurs second

WHITEHAVEN consolidated second place in the Wearside League with a home win against Annfield.

The hosts began nervously and Annfield enjoyed the best of the opening exchanges. Snailham and Tinnion controlled the midfield and threatened Jack Fryer’s goal.

But the home side held out and were able to take the lead after 17 minutes when Wayne Collins found the net with a powerful header, only for Annfield to equalise straight away through a clever shot from Stephen Kirkbride.

The goal seemed to spur Amateurs on and they regained the lead when Darren Donald tapped home after a mistake from Annfield’s keeper Hedley, and made it 3-1 from the spot through Carl McGrady.

The second half saw Whitehaven completely dominate proceedings and it was no surprise when Mally Holliday added to their lead with a 30-yarder which flew past Hedley, and Mike Farrer had his industry rewarded when he completed the scoring.
