FRIZINGTON White Star have reached the final of the Tesco Cumberland County League’s ISS Waterers Peter Dawson Benevolent Cup.
The First Division leaders won 3-2 at Premier Division Silloth with goals from Dean Rodgers (2) and Kevin Smith.
Malcolm Graham had scored both goals for Silloth but White Star continued their pursuit of a trophy treble in determined fashion.
They will meet Premier Division champions and current leaders Netherhall in the final after the Maryport side scored a narrow 2-1 win over Wigton Harriers in the other semi-final.
Adam Tinnion and Mark Smith scored for Netherhall while Tinnion also had the misfortune of putting through his own goal.
This is the competition they want to win as it’s named for the first time after a friend and close member of the Netherhall staff, the late Peter Dawson.
As a result of this pairing, the League will have to reshuffle the final dates as Frizington will contest the Benevolent Cup final, which will now be on Wednesday, May 7; the Crest Team Wear Conway Cup final will now be on Monday, May 5 along with the Divisional Cup final and the CFM Whitehaven Cup final will now be on Saturday, May 10 and not May 3 as planned.
Last Wednesday’s action saw Netherhall move a step closer to retaining their County League title as a 2-1 victory over Silloth and a 4-3 defeat for Aspatria at Cockermouth put them in pole position.
With five games left, Netherhall need just two victories to be crowned champions as they have a far better goal difference than Aspatria.
Victory over Whitehaven and Carlisle City will mean it’s all over bar the shouting and, after those two fixtures, Netherhall go to Aspatria and that would leave Whitehaven AFC and Salterbeck, both at home.
Keith Anderson and Mark Smith scored the goals which gave them victory at Silloth for whom Tom Rudd was on target.
Keith Skillen scored all four in Cockermouth’s victory with Stuart Irwin (2) and Richard Hudson notching the goals for Aspatria.
Mirehouse’s survival hopes weren’t helped by a 4-1 defeat at Wigton Harriers with Ryan Smith on target but sharp-shooter Mike Riding grabbed another hat-trick for Wigton with Gavin Brough also on target.
The big relegation battle saw Hearts of Liddesdale win 3-0 at Carlisle City with goals from Daniel Brough (2) and Barry Robertson.
The midweek games in Division One saw victories for Frizington White Star and Whitehaven Miners.
White Star won 3-1 at Windscale with goals from Alan Blair, Barry Armfield and Kevin Smith. Lee Stainton kept Windscale in the game.
Miners were 6-2 winners at home to St Bees with Martin Thomason helping himself tom four of the goals.
Tony Harrison and Ryan Taylor were also on the mark for Miners with Miller and Bishop responding for St Bees.
Mirehouse bounced back on Saturday with an important Premier Division win, hammering Hearts 11-2 in West Cumbria.
Ryan Smith, Steffan Scott and Dan McDermott all helped themselves to hat-tricks with Carl Smith notching two. The consistent Gavin Brough got both for Hearts.
Longtown and Cockermouth shared the Premier Division points after a 2-2 draw. Phil Storey got both for the home side and Steven Taylor and Martin Thompson netted for Cockermouth.
The First Division game between St Bees and Carlisle Spartans also finished all square at 2-2 with Woodburn netting both for the West Cumbrians. Davidson and Graham, netted for Spartans.
