Cultured pupils show off their creative skills in exhibition

YOUNG West Cumbrian artists are showing off their internationally-inspired work in an exhibition at The Beacon in Whitehaven.

ALL OUR OWN WORK: Pupils from Monkwray Primary School are proud as punch their art work is on display at a schools’ exhibition in The Beacon.

Culture Across Continents runs until March 15 and features the talents of children from the West Cumbria Excellence Cluster of schools - a partnership of schools from Maryport, Workington and Whitehaven.

The pupils have learned about many other cultures over the last year and the exhibition of paintings, textiles, 3D objects, books, photographs and musical installations will celebrate both Cumbrian and international culture.

Michelle Kelly, curator at The Beacon, which put on a similar show in 2006, said: “It was great to host such a creative display of schools’ talent here at The Beacon and we are delighted that we can work with the West Cumbria Excellence Cluster once again.

“The children’s work won rave reviews and some visitors even asked if work was for sale. I know this new exhibition with its international flavour will be just as good, if not better.”

The Beacon is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4.30pm, and entry to the Harbour Gallery is free.

Karen Thompson, exhibition organiser and cultural coordinator for the cluster, said: “The exhibition demonstrates that the pupils not only have an understanding of the activities of other cultures, but can draw parallels with those cultures alongside their own very rich and diverse Cumbrian heritage.

“The artists, practitioners, staff and pupils and some of their parents have worked very hard to produce the exciting, colourful work on display, some of which is also poignant, emotional and deeply touching.”
