Soccer sides gear up for historic final

THE Shipowners Charity Cup final will be played outside its North East heartland for the first time in its 130-year history when Whitehaven Amateurs host Cleator Moor Celtic at the County Ground on Friday night (6.30pm kick-off).

It will also be the first time two Cumbrian sides have met in the final, and Amateurs will be hoping to go one better than last season, when they were pipped 2-1 in extra-time by Wolviston in the final.

Admission to the game is £2 for adults and £1 for pensioners and children.

Meanwhile, Whitehaven were waiting with bated breath as their promotion to the Northern League hangs in the balance.

Having finished their campaign with a 2-1 win over Silksworth on Saturday, they needed rivals Jarrow to drop points against Annfield Plain on Wednesday night to confirm their promotion.
