Pleasant surprise awaits those tackling this film

Andrew Clarke reviews the DVD, Interview

WHATEVER line of work you’re in, everyone, at some time or another, has been asked by their boss to carry out a task that their heart really isn’t in.

This was the situation that was faced by Steve Buscemi’s character in the new DVD release Interview.

Buscemi plays Pierre Peders, a fading political journalist who has been sent by his editor, against his wishes, to interview the latest film beauty on the block, Katya, played by Sienna Miller.

Infuriated and distracted that he is missing a political meltdown in Washington to meet with the self-involved Katya in a plush New York restaurant, Peders instantly gets off on the wrong foot with his interviewee and their meeting ends abruptly after a few awkward minutes.

But a chance meeting on their respective journeys home from the restaurant throws the unlikely pair back together. And when they end up back at Katya’s flat, their personalities begin to unravel amidst drink, drugs and passion.

Interview is an interesting film in that, apart from a couple of extras, Buscemi and Miller are the only two characters in the film.

It is almost all dialogue, but a sharp script and good performances from the two actors keep the story moving and the viewer interested.

Deepest, darkest secrets are revealed, home truths are told and mistakes are admitted as the pair learn more about each other than they ever thought possible.

An original and enjoyable character-driven film that at 84-minutes long, with a nice twist in the end, is just long enough to stop it from getting stale.

Next time, the new animation from Pixar, Ratatouille.
