WHITEHAVEN’S depleted second-string timed their end-of-season run to perfection, beating title winners Leigh 16-6 to book their play-off place in the last league game of the campaign.

Dave Smith’s side now host Widnes Vikings in the opening round of the play-offs on Saturday (2.30pm).

“We came through when we had to,” said manager Dave Farrell. “I think we deserved it, the way we played over the season.

“Leigh said before the game they hadn’t brought a full-strength side, but we didn’t have ours either, by any means. Full marks to those who stepped up to the plate.

“What the make-up of our team against Widnes will be, we are yet to see, but if we play with the same attitude and enthusiasm, we have to feel confident.”

Paul Lancaster, Daniel Smith, two, and Tyrone Dalton crossed for Haven’s reserve-grade, who were without young forwards Marc Shackley and Danny Barker, following their first-team call-ups at the weekend.

Veteran prop David Fatialofa starred for Haven as he continued his return from long-term injury.

“Even though not fully fit, he had a big influence on our performance,” added Farrell, who is delighted with the reserve-grade’s role at the club this term.

“It’s not just about results, and in terms of output, and players coming through in to the first-team, it’s probably been our best season ever. The challenge now is to maintain that.”

In addition to Barker and Shackley, Gregg McNally, David Ford Marc Bainbridge and Chris Smith have all stepped up this year.

If Haven beat the Vikings they next face the winners of the Salford/Barrow tie.
